The Youth Consultation Workshop on AMR Country Statement in Bangladesh was successfully held on 9 May 2026 at TSC Community Hall-2, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, marking an important step toward structured youth participation in antimicrobial resistance governance.

The workshop was jointly organized by IVSA PSTU Bangladesh and IVSA KAU Bangladesh, in technical collaboration with One Health Youth Alliance Bangladesh (OHYAB). The event was funded and supported by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) under the Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Project. Special acknowledgment was extended to Bangladesh Radiantself Community (BRC) for its cooperation and support.

The consultation brought together 93 youth participants from 11 universities and medical colleges, 4 student organizations, and 2 farmer representatives, representing diverse disciplines including veterinary medicine, human health, public health, environmental science, fisheries, agriculture, nutrition and food science, and microbiology. The workshop served as a multidisciplinary One Health platform, allowing young people to contribute directly to Bangladesh’s AMR policy dialogue.

The program was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Md. Belal Hossain, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. In his remarks, he described AMR as an emerging “silent disaster” for Bangladesh and emphasized the need for environmental sustainability within the One Health framework.

Technical sessions were delivered by experts from animal health, human health, and environmental health sectors. Speakers included Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Upazila Livestock Officer and Focal Point, MPTF Project, DLS; Dr. Samsad Rabbani Khan, Field Epidemiologist and former Deputy Program Manager of the AMR Containment component under DGHS; and Dr. Md. Jashim Uddin, Professor, Department of Soil, Water and Environment, University of Dhaka. Additional expert contributions were provided by Dr. Ibrahim Khalil, Senior Scientific Officer, FDIL Barishal, DLS, and Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, AMR MPTF Consultant for Bangladesh, WOAH.

A key feature of the workshop was its structured youth deliberation process. Participants worked in multidisciplinary groups under six thematic areas: Human Health, Animal Health and Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Environment and Wildlife, Policy, Youth and Global Partnerships, and Private Sector and Public-Private Partnerships for AMR Action. The discussions focused not only on awareness but also on governance gaps, regulatory enforcement, surveillance systems, and institutional accountability.

The youth participants identified several priority recommendations, including strict enforcement of prescription-only antibiotic sales, banning antibiotic growth promoters in livestock and aquaculture, strengthening inter-agency coordination among DGDA, DGHS, DLS and related authorities, recognizing veterinary services as an emergency service, establishing stronger AMR surveillance systems, and ensuring meaningful youth inclusion in national AMR governance.

The workshop also included field-level perspectives from two poultry farmers associated with the Model Poultry Village initiative. They shared practical experiences on antibiotic-minimal and antibiotic-free poultry farming through improved biosecurity and farm management practices, adding important grassroots insight to the consultation.

At the closing session, the finalized Youth AMR Country Statement was formally adopted and handed over to Dr. Md. Bayzer Rahman, Director Administration, DLS, WOAH Delegate, and Chief Veterinary Officer of Bangladesh. The statement was presented by Dr. Md. Amin Al Maruf, Vice President of OHYAB, and Md. Simoon Hasan, Event Management Coordinator of OHYAB and President of IVSA PSTU Bangladesh.

As the conceptual lead of the program and facilitator of the technical session, Dr. Abu Sayed, President of OHYAB, underscored the importance of transforming youth engagement in AMR from awareness-based participation into structured policy deliberation. He emphasized that AMR is not a future threat but a present emergency affecting hospitals, farms, food systems, and water bodies. According to him, the workshop demonstrated that young people can contribute not only as advocates, but also as informed stakeholders capable of identifying governance gaps and proposing practical, multisectoral solutions. He further highlighted the need to institutionally embed youth voices within national AMR governance and the One Health framework.

Dr. Md. Amin Al Maruf, Vice President of OHYAB, stated that the workshop demonstrated the true spirit of One Health, where veterinary students, public health professionals, fisheries researchers, environmental scientists, and farmers worked together to draft a national document.

The initiative demonstrates that structured youth consultation can generate policy-relevant, systems-oriented recommendations for AMR governance. It also shows that youth engagement is feasible, necessary, and valuable in strengthening Bangladesh’s national response to antimicrobial resistance.

The Study in Europe – Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Masterclass, organized by SciSkill and in collaboration with One Health Youth Alliance Bangladesh, was successfully held on 16 and 17 May 2026.

In this two-day masterclass, participants received hands‑on guidance on document preparation, application strategy, selection process, and post‑selection life (visa, stipend, adaptation in Europe) needed to obtain the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

Special thanks to Mehedi Hasan Tonmoy and Dr. Abu Sayed – both Erasmus Mundus scholars themselves – who guided the students with their real‑life experiences.

জাতিসংঘের খাদ্য ও কৃষি সংস্থা (FAO), বাংলাদেশ AMR রেসপন্স অ্যালায়েন্স (BARA)-এর সহযোগিতায় এবং ফ্লেমিং ফান্ডের আর্থিক সহায়তায়, ঢাকার ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজে “ওয়ান হেলথ” পদ্ধতির আওতায় অ্যান্টিমাইক্রোবিয়াল রেজিস্ট্যান্স (AMR) ও অ্যান্টিমাইক্রোবিয়াল ব্যবহার (AMU) বিষয়ক একটি সচেতনতামূলক কর্মশালা আয়োজন করেছে।

এই কর্মশালায় বাংলাদেশ মেডিকেল স্টুডেন্টস সোসাইটি (BMSS) এবং ওয়ান হেলথ ইয়ুথ অ্যালায়েন্স বাংলাদেশ (OHYAB) -এর ভেটেরিনারি ও মেডিকেল শিক্ষার্থীরা সক্রিয়ভাবে অংশগ্রহণ করে, যা আন্তঃখাতীয় জ্ঞান বিনিময় ও সহযোগিতাকে আরও জোরদার করে। অনুষ্ঠানে মোট ২০০ জন শিক্ষার্থী (১০০ জন ভেটেরিনারি ও ১০০ জন মেডিকেল) উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

কর্মশালায় অংশগ্রহণকারীরা ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতাল প্রাঙ্গণে একটি সচেতনতামূলক ক্যাম্পেইন পরিচালনা করে এবং দায়িত্বশীল অ্যান্টিমাইক্রোবিয়াল ব্যবহারের প্রচারে AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) শ্রেণিবিন্যাস সংবলিত পোস্টার ও ব্যানার বিতরণ করে।

উপস্থিত ছিলেন ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজের অধ্যক্ষ, ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালের পরিচালক, মাইক্রোবায়োলজি বিভাগের প্রধানসহ বিভিন্ন গণ্যমান্য ব্যক্তিবর্গ। এছাড়াও শের-ই-বাংলা কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভেটেরিনারি অনুষদের ডিনের প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে প্রভাষক জনাব খায়রুল ইসলাম উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

OHYAB-এর পক্ষ থেকে সংগঠনের ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট ও স্পোকসপার্সন ডাঃ মোঃ আমিম আল মারুফ (Md. Amim Al Maruf) তার বক্তব্যে বলেন—

   “বাংলাদেশে তরুণদের সম্পৃক্ততা এখনও অত্যন্ত সীমিত, যার ফলে তারা মাঠপর্যায়ের বাস্তব অভিজ্ঞতা ও ওয়ান হেলথ চর্চার সুযোগ থেকে অনেকটাই বঞ্চিত হচ্ছে। OHYAB-      এর যাত্রা শুরু হয় গত বছরের ডিসেম্বরে। আমাদের মূল লক্ষ্য ‘One Health’-এ তরুণদের সরাসরি সম্পৃক্ত করা এবং মাঠপর্যায়ে এর বাস্তবায়ন নিশ্চিত করা। বর্তমানে          আমাদের দেশে One Health বিষয়ক কার্যক্রম মাঠ পর্যায়ে অনেকটাই সীমিত পরিসরে হয়, যার ফলে কৃষক ও স্বল্পশিক্ষিত জনগোষ্ঠীর কাছে এর কার্যকর প্রয়োগ পৌঁছায় না। আমরা সবাইকে নিয়ে কাজ করতে চাই এবং BMSS, FAO, BARA-সহ সংশ্লিষ্ট সব প্রতিষ্ঠানের সহযোগিতা কামনা করি।” 

অনুষ্ঠান শেষে তিনি তরুণদের OHYAB-এর কার্যক্রমে সক্রিয়ভাবে যুক্ত হওয়ার আহ্বান জানান।

অনুষ্ঠানে OHYAB-এর সম্মানিত উপদেষ্টা Dr. Mohammad Wasif ul Alam, অধ্যাপক, আমেরিকান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিভার্সিটি বাংলাদেশ, উপস্থিত ছিলেন। এছাড়াও OHYAB-এর অন্যান্য প্রতিনিধিদের মধ্যে Rita Khalko (Co-External Relations Coordinator) এবং Md. Simoon Hasan (Event Management Coordinator) অংশগ্রহণ করেন।

কর্মশালাটি AMR বিষয়ক কুইজ, বিতর্ক ও পোস্টার প্রতিযোগিতার বিজয়ীদের মাঝে পুরস্কার বিতরণের মাধ্যমে সমাপ্ত হয়। পাশাপাশি মানব ও প্রাণী স্বাস্থ্য খাতের ওপর শিক্ষার্থী ও ইন্টার্নদের উপস্থাপনা কর্মশালাকে আরও সমৃদ্ধ করে। এসময় শিক্ষার্থী, ইন্টার্ন, BARA সদস্য এবং FAO প্রতিনিধিরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন

উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে, এই আয়োজনটি OHYAB-এর যাত্রার প্রথম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মাইলফলক – যা ফ্লেমিং ফান্ডের অর্থায়নে ও FAO বাংলাদেশের আয়োজনে এবং BARA-এর সহযোগিতায় বাস্তবায়িত হয়েছে। ভবিষ্যতেও এ ধরনের প্রভাবশালী কার্যক্রমের মাধ্যমে One Health ধারণাকে মাঠপর্যায়ে ছড়িয়ে দেওয়ার প্রত্যয় ব্যক্ত করা হয়েছে।

আয়োজকরা সকল অংশগ্রহণকারী, বিজয়ী ও সহযোগী প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রতি আন্তরিক কৃতজ্ঞতা জানান। বিশেষভাবে আয়োজনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদানের জন্য ডাঃ হামিদা মুনিরা (ন্যাশনাল টেকনিকাল এডভাইজার, এফএও, বাংলাদেশ)-কে OHYAB-এর পক্ষ থেকে ধন্যবাদ জানানো হয়।

শেষ কথা:

অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক, অ্যান্টিফাঙ্গাল, অ্যান্টিপ্যারাসিটিক এবং অ্যান্টিভাইরাল ওষুধের অপব্যবহার রোধে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি এখন সময়ের দাবি। সঠিক চিকিৎসকের পরামর্শ ছাড়া এসব ওষুধ ব্যবহার থেকে বিরত থাকার জন্য সকলের প্রতি আহ্বান জানানো হচ্ছে।

এই উদ্যোগটি AMR মোকাবেলায় সমন্বিত “ওয়ান হেলথ” পদ্ধতির গুরুত্বকে তুলে ধরে এবং মানব, প্রাণী ও পরিবেশের স্বাস্থ্যসুরক্ষায় আমাদের সম্মিলিত অঙ্গীকারকে আরও দৃঢ় করে।

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Bangladesh AMR Response Alliance (BARA) and with financial support from the Fleming Fund, organized an awareness workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Antimicrobial Use (AMU) under the “One Health” approach at Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka.

Veterinary and medical students from the Bangladesh Medical Students Society (BMSS) and the One Health Youth Alliance Bangladesh (OHYAB) actively participated in this workshop, further strengthening cross-sectoral knowledge exchange and collaboration. A total of 200 students (100 veterinary and 100 medical students) were present at the event.

The program included:

• Awareness rally

• AMR quiz competition

• Debate competition

• Poster presentation

• AMR awareness activities in medical wards

Participants of the workshop conducted an awareness campaign on the premises of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and distributed posters and banners containing the AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) classification to promote responsible antimicrobial use.

Present at the event were the Principal of Dhaka Medical College, the Director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the Head of the Department of Microbiology, and other distinguished individuals. In addition, Lecturer Mr. Khairul Islam was present as the representative of the Dean of the Veterinary Faculty of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

Speaking on behalf of OHYAB, the organization’s Vice President and Spokesperson, Dr. Md. Amim Al Maruf, said:

“Youth engagement in Bangladesh is still very limited, as a result of which they are largely deprived of field-level practical experience and One Health practice opportunities. OHYAB’s journey began in December last year. Our main goal is to directly engage young people in ‘One Health’ and ensure its implementation at the grassroots level. Currently, One Health-related activities in our country are largely limited in scope at the field level, as a result of which effective application does not reach farmers and less-educated communities. We want to work together with everyone and seek cooperation from BMSS, FAO, BARA, and all relevant organizations.”

At the end of the event, he called upon young people to actively join OHYAB’s activities.

OHYAB’s respected advisor, Dr. Mohammad Wasif ul Alam, Professor at the American International University of Bangladesh, was present at the event. Other OHYAB representatives included Rita Khalko (Co-External Relations Coordinator) and Md. Simoon Hasan (Event Management Coordinator).

The workshop concluded with the distribution of prizes among the winners of the AMR quiz, debate, and poster competitions. Additionally, presentations by students and interns on human and animal health sectors enriched the workshop. Students, interns, BARA members, and FAO representatives were present on the occasion.

Notably, this event marks the first major milestone of OHYAB’s journey – implemented with funding from the Fleming Fund, under the arrangement of FAO Bangladesh, and in collaboration with BARA. A commitment was expressed to continue spreading the One Health concept at the grassroots level through such impactful activities in the future.

The organizers extended their sincere gratitude to all participants, winners, and partner organizations. Special thanks were given from OHYAB to Dr. Hamida Munira (National Technical Advisor, FAO Bangladesh) for her significant contribution to the event.

Closing message:
Raising awareness to prevent misuse of antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics, and antiviral drugs is the need of the hour. Everyone is urged to refrain from using these medicines without proper medical consultation.

This initiative highlights the importance of a coordinated “One Health” approach in tackling AMR and further strengthens our collective commitment to protecting human, animal, and environmental health.
